  12. DESCRIPTION
  13.     When  changing  a  password,  passwd  prompts  for  the  old
  14.     password  and  then  for the new one.  You must supply both,
  15.     and  the  new  password  must  be  typed  twice to forestall
  16.     mistakes.

  18.     New  passwords  should  be at least five characters long, if
  19.     they  combine upper-case and lower-case letters, or at least
  20.     six  characters  long if in monocase.  Users that persist in
  21.     entering passwords will be accepted.

  33.     Password algorithms do not work with 8-bit characters.  This
  34.     maintains consistency with login file naming rules, which do
  35.     not  allow  8-bit  characters in login names.  See login for
